Save our Suburbs -- Sign the Petition!
Kathy Hochul’s urbanization plan is back and worse than ever. In her recent State of the State address, Governor Kathy Hochul announced a proposal to create high-density housing zones around every Long Island train station while also stripping local towns and villages (and thereby the residents) of their ability to control local zoning. This proposal ensures that large-scale multifamily housing will be developed around each train station while removing the right of residents to challenge the development. To make matters worse, the Governor’s plan will eliminate public hearings for development projects, effectively silencing the community’s input regarding the future of their neighborhoods and homes. This is signaling the end of single-family home neighborhoods and is a direct assault on the suburbs.
The proposed plan is a power grab for New York State and will force Long Island to become the sixth borough of New York City. While the proposal speaks to creating high-density housing, it does not address upgrading the existing infrastructure to accommodate the population increase. Schools will be overcrowded, volunteer fire departments will be overworked and the amount of cars on our local roadways will surge.
Town of Hempstead Supervisor Don Clavin and the Town Board need YOUR help in saving our suburbs. Let Governor Kathy Hochul know that we will NOT give up our right to a suburban quality of life.
