Traffic Control & Street Lighting Divisions

Traffic Control Division

The Town of Hempstead Traffic Control Division is responsible for the manufacturing, installation, and maintenance of approximately 375,000 traffic control signs located throughout the towns roadways. The town ensures compliance with current New York State traffic standards and is also responsible for surveying and inspecting new sign requests and sign repeals.

Missing Street Signage

To report missing or damaged street signage on a town roadway, please contact the Division of Traffic Control at (516) 378-2260 and press 2  during regular business hours.  You may also submit your request online using the Street Sign Maintenance Request form. After hours, contact the Department of Public Safety at 516-538-1900.

New Sign Request

To request a new installation or request a repeal of a sign, you must write a detailed letter that includes your name, address, telephone number, type of sign requested, and a brief description and send it to the following address:

TOWN OF HEMPSTEAD
TOWN ATTORNEY’S OFFICE
1 Washington Street
Hempstead New York, 11550

New sign requests/removals such as stop signs,  parking restrictions, no truck signs, reserved parking (handicapped parking, school zone speed limit signs) require Town Board approval which can take two to three months.

Handicap parking signs must include a copy of your handicap parking permit in the letter.

Street Lighting Division

The Street Lighting Division is responsible for the installation, maintenance, and inspection of approximately 50,000 street lighting units and approximately 500 miles of underground electrical infrastructure located on town roadways and town-maintained parking fields.  Street Lighting DOES NOT maintain parkway lights or any lights located within incorporated villages.

Street Light Outage

In the event that a street light is out, contact the Town of Hempstead Street Lighting Division during regular business hours. You will need to give the exact location of the pole, and, if available, the pole number. Initial response to outage requests usually runs 5 to 7 business days. You may also report a street lighting issue online using the  Street Lighting Service Request form. For updates on the status of an outage, please contact the Town of Hempstead Street Lighting office at 516-378-2260 and press 1 during regular business hours.

Street Light Pole Down

A downed light pole can pose serious problems because the wires leading to the light are energized. Do not attempt to move the pole. Contact the Town of Hempstead Traffic Control Division during regular business hours. After hours, contact the Department of Public Safety at 516-538-1900 so that they can make the proper arrangements to have a street lighting crew pick up the pole. You may verify the jurisdiction of a roadway using the Nassau County Road Jurisdiction Viewer tool.
