Child Car Seat Safety Program
Nothing is more important than the safety of our children. With this in mind, the Town of Hempstead has established a free Child Car Seat Safety Check Program.
Under New York State's Child Restraint Law, a child must remain in an appropriate child restraint system while riding in a motor vehicle until the age of eight. An appropriate child restraint system is one that meets the child's size and weight recommended by the manufacturer. A child restraint system may be a child safety seat, harness, vest, or booster seat.
Hempstead Town's certified Child Passenger Safety Technicians will inspect vehicles to be sure that car and booster seats are properly positioned and correctly installed. Technicians will also instruct guardians on their proper installation, recommend appropriate car seats, and check for notices of recalls or possible defects for the current model being used.
Generally, 30 minutes are allotted for each inspection appointment. Please call the Department of Public Safety at 516-538-1900, ext. 7709, Monday through Friday between the hours of 9 am and 4:30 pm to schedule an appointment. You may also complete the appointment request form below and a Public Safety Officer will contact you at your daytime phone number upon review, usually the next business day.
During the fall and winter, car seat inspections take place at Speno Memorial Park in East Meadow from 9 am to 2 pm. Appointments are required year-round and must be made in advance by calling the Department of Public Safety at 516-538-1900, ext. 7709. During the summer months, car seat inspections will take place at neighborhood locations throughout the town. Please note: Summer appointments (especially weekend dates) book early and are made on a first-come, first-served basis.
